Australian Live Cattle Arriving in Hainan: Fresh Opportunities Behind the Free Trade Port's First Shipment

In July 2020, a cargo ship carrying 1,785 live Angus cattle slowly docked at Ma Village Port in Chengmai, Hainan, after a 10-day voyage. This marked not only the first batch of Australian live cattle imported duty-free under Hainan Free Trade Port policies, but also signaled the official launch of Hainan Hua'ao Livestock Co., Ltd.'s slaughter and processing project—a multi-year endeavor that opened a new chapter in the premium beef supply chain.

These cattle were meticulously selected from Australian ecological pastures, undergoing rigorous standards from pre-shipment quarantine to continuous veterinary supervision throughout the voyage. Upon arrival, they swiftly cleared customs via a green channel and were transported to a quarantine facility. After completing a 45-day quarantine period and passing inspections, these zero-tariff Australian cattle entered the slaughter line, transforming into fresh hot beef. The first batch of products was promptly launched in supermarkets and farmers' markets across Haikou.

This import achieved multiple breakthroughs: Leveraging the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement, tariffs on live cattle imports were reduced to zero; the centralized procurement model effectively controlled transportation costs; More significantly, it established a complete industrial chain encompassing “importation—quarantine—slaughter—processing—sales.” Phase one of the project boasts an annual slaughter capacity of 100,000 head, enabling Hainan residents to enjoy high-quality Australian beef at an affordable price of around 50 yuan per jin (approximately $7.50 USD per pound), while also serving markets in Guangdong and Guangxi.

From Australian pastures to Chinese dining tables, this transaction represents not only a triumph in trade but also a vivid illustration of the policy dividends from Hainan's Free Trade Port. It demonstrates Hainan's unique advantages in developing high-end livestock farming and building international supply chains, providing a replicable model for future large-scale imports of premium global protein sources.
